Text me back? Now, that question tends to spark an argument in my head every time. Do we truly want the text and want to sit around waiting or do we not have the time to lose on that person? What better way to figure this out and check in with those emotions tumbling around in our heads than with Willa Marj's beautiful voice and energy. Willa is a 20-year-old Filipina American Neo-Soul/Indie/R&B artist from San Diego. She takes inspiration from her Asian Pacific Islander roots, the energies of the universe, and various genres such as R&B, Jazz, Indie, and Neo-Soul in order to create music she hopes will connect with others and will represent the Asian Pacific American community.
The song starts off putting me in the most relaxed state of mind I've been in for a while with a gradual ascend and smooth R&B sounds. Willa goes in straight to the point delving into a dilemma I've found myself in one too many times. She talks about the struggle of knowing you don't have all the free time in the world to be letting someone come into your life and waste the little hours you've got to spare. As a 21-year-old woman in today's society I treasure my time and who and what I spend it on. I know that if I want something, whether it be emotionally or professionally, I have to work twice as hard to be ready for it when it comes to me. Indeed, relationships are just as important as anything else and Willa does a great job in highlighting a decision most of us have come across in our lives.
"I want affection, don't need no tension if you can't give me all I need I'll move on. I want a good thing, tired of this fake shit. If you won't sweep me off my feet then I'm gone." -Willa

I don't know about you guys, but those lyrics deeply resonated with me. Maybe you've been in a position where you feel games are being played or you've simply had bad experiences with partner communication. Willa is not here to play games ladies and gents. She's here for the real thing, she knows her worth, and she knows she's not made to wait around. Hopefully you can be reminded of that in your own life after listening to "Text Me Back". Whenever you need a feeling of relaxed, yet strong, beats and confidence traveling throughout your body this is the song to look for. I can see myself with Willa at the end as she tells that person they can move ahead into the other direction if they don't have the capacity to keep her attention.
"How long do I gotta wait for you to text me back? Do you expect to win me over when you play like that? Baby I'm not in it for the game." -Willa

Willa believes "self-expression taps into our innate desire to connect, heal, and belong," and she's definitely shown that here. Her music is not only an avenue for herself to express, but she's also made it an avenue for others to heal, to connect, to reminisce... to really do anything within your own spirits. And she's done it with strong R&B beats and calming melodies reminiscent of H.E.R. and Raveena -- It's a vibe <3
Before I go, I encourage you all to follow Willa's socials where she not only uses her platforms to share music, but also to share wellness and social justice resources. We all need healing at some point and if her art can help in any way, don't wait to start.
I don't like to wait boy. -Willa
