Ever felt like a relationship could've ended better, maybe you've worked too hard on something to let it go? Every Other Year (EOY), a Pop Punk band from Orange County, has something to say about those feelings in their single "The Look In Your Eyes". When I first heard these boys perform live I could feel their emotion coming right off the stage and resonating with everyone present. Since 2014 Michael, Jordan, Matt and Dylan have been giving their audience story after story through their distinct blend of Pop Punk sounds and hints of melodic hardcore Rock vibes. Their early music will remind you of bands like My Chemical Romance and Green Day and their most recent projects have incorporated more Pop sounds reminiscent of the band 5 Seconds of Summer. A perfect mix.
As you've noticed, I'm turning the page on our recent R&B and Reggaeton chapters and taking you on an emotion filled journey in EOY's distinct Pop Punk language. The track starts off with heavy rock vibes used to emulate the feeling left after realizing you've closed in on a road you didn't want to end, and it gradually adds in pop influences used to depict the point in the breakup process where there's nothing left but to accept the emotions lost. At least that's the way I heard it.
"We've come too far to let this go" - EOY
I can hear myself screaming along with Michael in that line. Finding music that truly reflects on the listener's emotions, at any point in their life, can be hard, but these boys make it easy to take tag along on the journey. If there's one thing I can say this song excelled in, it is the power to paint a picture in my head of the story being told. I could see the "rain running down [the] window" and I swear I saw the rainstorm coming down on my room for a minute there. I could feel the urge to hold on to that person as the boys asked her not to run away, not to let them feel the pain touching those raindrops on a gloomy day.
"Judging by the look in your eyes, I know that nothing lasts forever." -EOY
In this track EOY allowed us to dwell on the difficulty of saying goodbye and the complications that come with wondering when it's too late to compromise in a relationship. I hope you enjoyed the ride and want to continue this journey with EOY as they prepare to release their first full-length album which I'm sure is filled with stories and emotions we won't be able to get enough of. For now, don't forget to take a listen to their recently released single "Yesterday" from the upcoming album. I'd say goodbye for today but...
