A book is only as good as the people it reaches, but not everyone speaks the same language. This is why today I tell a story of liberation from an Indie Electronic approach and a language new to me. I found a unique Synth-Pop band from San Diego in my own school's organization, the Music Industry Club. Anthony Ramirez (synthesizer/bass), Tania Costello (vocals), and Michael Buehl (drums) incorporate several elements from Indie, post punk, and modern electronic to create a characteristic sound and deliver personal messages many of us have wanted to send out before. They deliver hypnotic female vocals over piercing synths, driving bass lines, and dance beats that don't disappoint.
You ever find yourself all alone dancing in your room and realizing you forgot everything that was inhibiting your happiness at the moment? Or how about a situation where you feel you're left to deal with your fears and anxieties on your own? Maybe a break-up, a team project, work, a friendship gone wrong, a bad relationship... any situation really.
"Leave me hanging in the madness, Leave her hanging in the madness." -Glass Spells
That madness that Tania sings about for me, is a compilation of due dates, errands, lost loves, stress, and societal expectations of a woman and very soon, a college graduate. In the track "Psychic Lovers", Glass Spells tells a story of overcoming anxieties through letting go and forgetting about your surroundings, specifically through dance. And I don't mean technique dance; I mean the dance you make up in your head and imagine performing on a big lit up stage.
Tania explains how she uses this song to feel less nervous on her own stage.
"Somehow...some way though...some entity within me takes over, that takes that anxiety and just transforms it into this crazy energy." Tania points out, "Suddenly I have this confidence that I didn't think I'd have."

"Dance alone. Feel it pounding...Psychic lovers, they hide around me." -Glass Spells
I definitely know what the band means with that one. Even while listening to the track, it's amazing the power both the music and lyrics have on my state of mind. I emotionally AND physically feel the lyrics with pulsing bass lines pounding in my chest - what a way to get me out of my head and body guys.
It doesn't stop there! I recommend you all go listen to their full EP "Mirrors". The San Diego Uptown News previously mentioned Glass Spells as the best new band for a reason! I know most of you have your LED lights set up and ready to dance it all out of your head ;) "Drop the fear, Hide your tears" amidst this Fall's midterm feels with Glass Spells.
You just gotta get out of your comfort zone to awaken the courage that sleeps inside you. -Tania
