Okay -- I'm excited about this week's discovery, seriously, I think we've found our next Contemporary R&B gem. SYLIS is a singer/songwriter, Hip Hop artist, producer, dancer, and actor from Minneapolis, MN currently residing in Hollywood, CA. His passion for the arts emerged during his middle school years where he trained and developed the skills that led him to be the multi-talented artist he is now. Some artists know from the start they want to make music but, in SYLIS's situation it all started with a passion for expression through storytelling in his poetry. You'll find his music to revolve around his life experiences and the experiences of others that were once emotions and thoughts swimming in poems.
Allowing yourself to open up to someone is not always an easy process at the beginning of a relationship. In his most recent single titled "SAFE" SYLIS indulges you in a heart throbbing musical journey made to represent the reassurance needed to trust a person and slowly and delicately let your walls down.
"If you let down your guard, I'll give you my heart." -SYLIS
The sound itself pairs beautifully with the heartfelt message and is reminiscent of Trey Songz's newer music, DVSN, Kehlani, and Chris Brown. The piece features effortlessly layered drums and soul-filling baritone vocals, not to mention the breathtaking falsettos. It's definitely a different take to his usual hard hitting Hip-Hop sound. SYLIS takes the rhythm in R&B to a further stretch with his eclectic sound taking major influences from Hip-Hop and soul. As I'm listening to "SAFE" I unconsciously feel every beat running through my body and soul telling my mind it's okay to lighten the load of feelings suppressed in time from moments of hurt. The song's production goes beyond brushing feelings on the surface and brilliantly uses every element, frequency and vocal arrangement to provide a personal note of vulnerability and emotional healing.
"I just want to love you and protect you. I want you to know you're safe." -SYLIS
In order to say this, one must be open and honest with him/herself and let their words be translucent and ears be non judgmental. SYLIS knows the weight words can hold and knows the more you hold onto them the more weight that's accumulated in your chest.
He hopes this song becomes a starting point to a bigger discussion to help lighten the load so many of us are carrying. Listen to his debut project on SoundCloud and expect groundbreaking visuals to accompany it soon!
See you next week, hope you enjoyed this chapter of O.M.O.S. (:
